Thoughts

We feel privileged to have known Peter. He was good company whether in a simple encounter on a bus after shopping in Chesham or when we promenaded together at the Amersham Martyrs Play. His determination to keep active to the end is a great inspiration for us to follow. Sylvia Avery

We first met Peter at musical events organised by Amersham Concert Club. He was a stalwart member dating back to the origins of the club in the 1960s. His knowledge and musical memory were inexhaustible. Whatever topic arose in conversation, Peter would regale you with stories of favourite past performances. You felt that his memories were note-perfect, even pitch-perfect. As his hearing diminished, he was reliant on that wonderful store of musical experiences. Peter’s capacity for remembering was no doubt a great asset to him when we, later, locked horns over friendly games of Bridge. I think most club players were daunted by the challenge of playing hands at Peter’s table; very difficult to get the better of, but always pleased when he detected good play by the opposition. He, nevertheless, was clear about the “best” line of play when things did not go quite right. A great servant to his clubs; we will miss him greatly. Lionel Avery

I consider myself very privileged to have enjoyed Peter's friendship. He had a positive outlook on life and did not let his eventual physical hindrances make him take a "back seat". He loved all the arts, bridge, his family, people in general, was a dedicated friend. He was able to turn the simplest things into a source of pleasure: a budding flower by his kitchen window, a game of crosswords..One of his latest enjoyments was taking a walk around the square in front of his house. He knew how to live. A model to be followed, a friend to be missed.
